Cornwall, 1889: The presentation of a paraffin lamp becomes an illuminating moment in young May’s life, and she decides to take her fate and that of her daughter Amy into her own hands. We accompany her on her journey in four spotlights.
The plot of Ella Hickson's Oil of the Earth spans 150 years (1889–2051). Seemingly effortlessly, May and Amy travel through time and tell a story of female emancipation against the backdrop of the global impact and dependence on one of the world's most important resources.
Armin Petras and his directing team stage the story of colonialism, capitalism, family and empowerment.
