In 17 Scenarios for Theatre, Anne—the character named in the title—remains conspicuously absent. Everything we come to know, or imagine, about her is revealed through the voices of others over the course of the performance. The result is a contradictory portrait of a woman and, at the same time, an exploration of how identity is constructed—or constructed for us by others.
Interwoven scenes, choreographic sequences, film footage, and offstage voices all attempt to approach her from different angles. How many lives can one person contain? Which version of reality holds true in a world saturated with images, events, and digital mediation? And can we discover part of ourselves in another person?
